Call Me by Your Name // The Final Scene

I am going to share a simple clip, even though this scene doesn’t have to many different shots (actually only has two shots), It is still a scene I am choosing to share. The scene begins with Elio (the protagonist) walking into the moving frame. The camera is scanning the table in a dining room setting and moving to the right when Elio walks into the room. So the first shot which is about 40 seconds follows Elio around the room smoothly. The shot ends with Elio crouching down and staring at the fireplace with his back towards the camera, we still get a good side profile of Elio though. The next shot jumps to a close-up of Elio’s face, it is the same scene of him crouching down and looking at the fireplace, but the director chose to use a different angle to portray the emotion the character is feeling. Personally, I feel that this is a beautiful composition, and one of my favorite scenes in the whole movie even though it is such a simple shot and contains no dialogue or action, it is still very powerful. The shot conveys mood; Elio is seen in the brink of crying, his eyes are all watery, the fire is reflecting off his face, creating shadows and his face has a soft orange hue from the fire’s glow. The background is dim, even though our attention is on Elio’s face there is still soft blurred movement in the background, there is snow falling outside the window and someone setting the dinner table. I think the transition of the audio adds to the aesthetic of the shot. At first we don’t hear anything except the fire crackling, it is a very comforting noise and then suddenly the music crawls in very slowly, it’s a melancholic tune that gets the audience to go from a tear-jerking state to a full on sob. And for the rest 4 minutes of the clip, nothing changes, it is still Elio crying and looking at the fire with the sad non-diegetic song in the background. The director chooses to have credits roll to the left of the screen while still keeping the scene of Elio. If this scene doesn’t make you sob uncontrollably then you must be a robot. Overall this was my favorite movie, I still think about this film everyday and I watched it last year. The cinematography was amazing the soundtrack was amazing the actors were amazing!!!!!!!! Timothee Chalamet is AMAZING!!!! I’m amazing!
